Professor Rob Stone’s major study of the cinema of Richard Linklater, Walk Don't Run: The Cinema of Richard Linklater, has just been published by Wallflower, an imprint of Columbia University Press.

Richard Linklater book

From Slacker and The School of Rock to Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, from low-budget American independent films to the philosophical traditions of the European art house, this volume reveals the films of Richard Linklater to be amongst the most critical, political and spiritual in contemporary world cinema. Examinations of his collaborative working practice, deployment of rotoscoping and innovative distribution strategies all feature in a study informed by a series of original interviews with Linklater in his hometown of Austin, Texas. It includes analysis of Dazed and Confused, A Scanner Darkly and Bernie, as well as documentaries and side-projects, exploring theoretical, practical, contextual and metaphysical elements in them all and finds that fanciful lives and lucid dreams have much to do with alternative notions of America, contemporary society, cinema and time.
