The main aim of my lab is to understand pain without injury. Consequently we hurt people using hypnosis, painful images, illusions and other trickery. I am generally interested in the nature of pain and the relationship between pain and consciousness.

Dr Grunfeld's research focuses on the role of beliefs, attitudes and perceptions on behaviour, particulalrly in relation to health. Her work has advanced knowledge of how beliefs around illness, risk, and social factors predict timelines of help-seeking behaviours, influence returning to work following illnesss and impact on short and long term adaptation.

I also supervise PhD students using qualitative research methods to explore experiences of psychological distress, recovery, relatedness and caring. My research interests are in these same areas.

Dr Nouwen’s main research interests focus on two areas: the motivational processes underlying dietary self-care in people with diabetes, and the Centre for Obesity Research. Dr Nouwen uses both applied clinical and social as well as experimental laboratory paradigms. He is Associate Editor of Diabetic Medicine and Consulting Editor of Health Psychology.
