Cognitive radio research

Cognitive radio is a revolutionary concept in control and management of the electromagnetic spectrum. In the future the spectrum will be deregulated and radios free to operate whereever they like provided they obey strict protocols based on careful measurement of current spectral occupancy and the need to prevent interference to others.

The concept places severe demands on all parts of the radio, but in particular, on antennas, filters and transceiver design. The integration of computational intelligence, which up to now has been rather limited, into all parts of the transceiver will also be necessary. In the context of the level of intelligence in current systems the term 'cognitive' is a misnomer. However, as in many other areas of optimization and control, future strategies may be neuro-biologically inspired.

    • Separate (omni) search and (directive) communication antennas, can be large
  • Handheld radio
    • Same antenna for search and communications
    • Small antennas

CHALLENGES


Chu-Harrington limit

  • Chu relates bandwidth of antenna to size 
  • Handsets have limited bandwidth, must be reconfigurable 
  • Harrington relates gain (efficiency) to size 
  • Small antennas will have low efficiency 

Interference

  • Legacy transmitters need filtering, done in antenna?

Fading

  • Seach antenna may be in fade, diversity?
