Optical Devices and Communication Laboratory

ghafouri-shiraz-hooshangThe Internet and mobile devices continue to grow as key utilities in people’s lives, presenting the optical communications industry (OCI) with new opportunities and challenges to ensure that networks can keep up with demand. Therefore the priorities for the OCI will be to support the need for faster data rates, more powerful switching, and smarter network architectures that can handle unpredictable and fast-changing traffic patterns and improve cost efficiencies. 

On the other hand, a Code-division multiple-access (CDMA) communication system allows multiple users to access the network simultaneously using unique codes. Optical CDMA has the advantage of using optical processing to perform certain network applications, like addressing and routing without resorting to complicated multiplexers or de-multiplexers. The asynchronous data transmission can simplify network management and control. Therefore, OCDMA is an attractive candidate for LAN application.  Particularly, optical CDMA can provide a secure network connection providing dynamic encoding. The main motivation for Optical CDMA (OCDMA) is the convenience of a highly asynchronous communication network and the potential of high throughput (capacity) without the overhead required by TDMA or other multiple access systems."
