Research

The ERI is the hub for the University’s research in the fields of European politics, economics, history, law, culture and society. Its expertise is truly pan-European, including EU institutions, old and new member states, Russia, the Balkans and the Wider Mediterranean.

The quality of the ERI’s research has been recognized by the policy-making community.

  • Anand Menon has coordinated a number of working groups for the European Secretariat of the Cabinet office during the Convention on the Future of Europe, was a speech writer for Kinnock and has acted as a Special Adviser to the House of Lords EU committee investigation into enlargement.
  • Derek Averre has worked on a series of government-funded projects examining Arms control and economic transition in the former USSR and is involved with the Russian-American Nuclear Security Advisory Council (RANSAC) and the Landau Network Centro Volta (LNCV) on bio-nonproliferation cooperation with the USSR successor states.
  • Tim Haughton has briefed three successive UK Ambassadors to Slovakia and has presented at several policy seminars organized by the US State Department in Washington DC.

Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) result - The European Research Institute (ERI) is delighted to celebrate its success as an international centre of excellence with another outstanding performance in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The institute was second in the ranking of World-Leading Research, and fourth on the Grade Point Average measure, out of 25 departments returned in the European Studies unit of assessment.  Learn more about the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE)
