On Saturday 16 October 2010 a group of MSc and PhD students from KBTU headed by the Kazakhstani project leader Dr. Svetlana Zhanabayeva visited University of Birmingham.
The visit included:
Meetings with representatives of different departments and faculties of the University of Birmingham;
Reading lectures in the course …….
Introduction of the Kazakh language course to the students of UoB;
Attending lectures and classes;
Using the University library;
Creating a website of the project;
Introduction of the Kaz
On Wednesday 20 October Dr. Galina Yemelianova and Prof. Svetlana Zhanabayeva met the head of CREES Dr. Derek Averre to discuss plans for further cooperation in the frame of the project.
Also on October Wednesday 20 October Professor Svetlana Zhanabayeva and Dr. Assel Jumasseitova made a presentation on politics, education, cultural life, and economic system of Kazakhstan, answered questions. The audience consisted of researchers of the Eastern European and Central Asia regions, PhD and MS students and the staff of the University of Birmingham, the "Bolashak" programme students studying in Great Britain.
On Wednesday 20 and 27 October Professor Svetlana Zhanabayeva held a seminar for the students of Central Asia: Islam, Nationalism, and Globalism on the topics: Culture and Politics in Central Asia and Kazakh Hordes before the Russian Period.
On Friday 22 October there was launched the Kazakh Cultural Centre at the University of Birmingham. At the opening of the Centre the guests and the “Bolashak” students were greeted by Dr. Galina Yemelianova, Prof. Svetlana Zhanabayeva with an introductory speech, the head of CREES Dr. Derek, and enjoyed the Kazakh folk dance of the “Bolashak” student Zhanar, Kazakh music, got acquainted with some pictures and souvenirs from Kazakhstan.
On Monday 25 October Professor Svetlana Zhanabayeva and Dr. Assel Jumasseitova met Professor Julian M Cooper to discuss his participation in the project as a co-supervisor of doctoral dissertations. Then they met Dr. Richard Connoly and got his agreement to come to the Kazakh-British Technical University and read a course of lectures on Economics.
On Thursday 28 October the Kazakhstani leader of the project Svetlana Zhanabayeva and a member of the team Maxim Strygin met the head of School of Computer Science Professor Achim Jung and Dr. Hayo Thielecke. The hosts expressed their interest in building links with KBTU and offered several opportunities for such contacts.
On Monday 01 November Ms. Emma Heathcote, Regional Manager of the International Relations Department and Robbie Roberts visited the CREES and had discussions on expanding the project with Dr Yemelianova, Prof. Zhanabayeva and Dr.Derek Averre, Director of CREES and Mr. Maxim Strygin, PhD researcher of Computer Science department.
