Dr Svetlana Zhanabayeva specialises in different aspects of teaching English. She has worked at different higher educational institutions of Kazakhstan. She started her career as a teacher of the English language and occupied positions of a chair at Zhambyl Water-Engineering Institute, Dean of Foreign Languages Department at Zhambyl Pedagogical Institute, and Dean of the English Language Department at Ablai khan University of International Relations and World Languages in Almaty.
She won grants of IREX in 1994 (University of Washington, Seattle, USA), 1997 (Indiana University, Bloomington, USA), of Soros-Kazakhstan Foundation in 1998 (Summer University of Central European University, Budapest, Hungary), and of Fulbright Committee in 2006 (UCLA, Los Angeles, USA).
In July 1993 Dr Svetlana Zhanabayeva was granted an Honourary Diploma of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In November 2009 she was elected the President of the Fulbright Association of Kazakhstan.
She has more than 15 publications on the issues of linguistics, teaching English and education.
