Eyes-on-Central-Asia

Workshop Leader(s): Dr Arezou Azad(Department of History)

This workshop will be part of the development of a multi-disciplinary research project, entitled “Eyes on Central Asia – From Damascus to Beijing,” which compares priorities of pre-modern Muslims with those of Russian and Chinese imperial powers in their imaginings of Central Asia, adding depth to discourses on Orientalism and ‘the clash of civilizations’. The workshop will bring together specialists on different periods, regions and languages to develop this more comprehensive, comparative and developmental picture of perceptions of Central Asia as ‘the other’ from the 8th century to the present.
