Understanding the complexity of the human mind and brain requires multiple levels of descriptions ranging from single cell electrophysiology to human behaviour. Moreover, we need to transcend the traditional disciplinary boundaries and integrate knowledge from many disciplines including psychology, neuroscience, computer science, physics and engineering. Computer science and robotic simulations will help us to define the computational operations and algorithms underlying neural functions and behaviour. Conversely, as robots are still surpassed by humans in many real-world tasks, robotics and computer science will gain new impetus from a deeper understanding of neural computations and functional organization of the human brain. Advances in neuroimaging acquisition and analysis methods will lead to new unprecedented insights into brain organization and functioning.

This cross-disciplinary workshop brings together world-leading expertise in psychology, neuroscience, computer science, engineering, robotics, medicine and physics from the Universities of Birmingham and Nottingham. The aim is to identify research themes that synergistically combine the complementary expertise from the two institutions.
