Workshop Leader: Professor Marie Fox

Part of the programme of work for the visit of the Institute of Advanced Studies Distinguished Visiting Fellow Professor Martha Fineman, this workshop will explore Professor Fineman’s pioneering research on vulnerability theory on legal studies and related disciplines. The workshop will bring together leading scholars who work in law, women’s studies, social policy and social justice and have explicitly engaged with the concept of vulnerability in their research.

Key questions to be addressed will include how far vulnerability approaches may facilitate progressive feminist outcomes, and the challenges for translating the theory into policy approaches. These questions will be taken up across a range of sites including the criminal justice system, the family, the workplace, the health care system and within scientific studies.

There will be a particular focus on how vulnerability has been deployed in the UK context but with important international perspectives offered by speakers working in the US and Scandinavia.
