Kawaler198x220

This session is intended to be a dialog between researchers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines who depend on scholarly publication to disseminate their own research and to keep abreast of developments in their field. Across disciplines, the practice of publication is adapting to the roles played by technology, social media, and the exponential growth in our collective knowledge of the world and Universe.  Practices vary from subject to subject when it comes to peer review (number of referees, time-to-publication, open vs. anonymous, etc.), but we all face to some extent similar issues: the tension between publishing in archival journals and (unrefereed) open access venues, ethics considerations, metrics used in promotion/evaluation, and so on. After opening with an overview of how the journals of the American Astronomical Society are addressing some of these issues, Professor Kawaler will join attendees in a discussion of your experiences and concerns about scholarly publishing in the coming decades.

Whilst Professor Kawaler's own research area (astronomy) is covered by the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the topics and discussion will be relevant to the biological, medical and life sciences, and we encourage members of all relevant Colleges to attend the session.
