NIHR Horizon Scanning Centre

Description
The NIHR Horizon Scanning Centre is a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) research programme, funded to provide advanced notice to the Department of Health and NHS policy makers of key emerging health interventions that may require consideration of their clinical and cost impact on patients and health services. The research team provide information to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), the NIHR Health Technology Assessment and other research programmes, the UK National Screening Committee, and the National Commissioning Group for rare disorders. The Centre collaborates with many organisations with an interest in the future including horizon scanning organisations and networks in the rest of the UK, Europe and the world. The group also researches into the methods used and impact of early awareness and alert activities. The Centre has traditionally focused on individual new and emerging technologies, mostly drugs, medical devices or diagnostic tests. Future plans include development of web-based reviews centred on key patient groups where information from the Centre's individual technology activities will be presented alongside an overview of future developments for the patient group.
