A postgraduate colloquium co-organised with colleagues from the Universities of Bristol and Bangor and supported jointly by the University of Birmingham’s Graduate Centre for Europe and Institute for German Studies. It will bring together postgraduate researchers from across the UK to consider recent developments in the history and representation of East Germany. Professor Helmut Peitsch (Universität Potsdam) and Professor Dennis Tate (University of Bath) will act as discussants for the student papers.
Call for papers
Papers are invited for a 1-day postgraduate colloquium focusing on the history and memory of GDR politics, culture and society. The GDR Today - Call for Papers (PDF 200KB).
We invite proposals for papers of no more than 10 minutes examining any area of the history, memory or culture of the GDR, including film, literature, museums, politics and the built environment. Students may choose to present an overview of their thesis as a whole, or an aspect of it on which they would particularly like feedback. Funding is available for eighteen students to attend the colloquium, including travel within the UK and lunch/refreshments throughout the day. Places will be allocated on a competitive basis. Abstracts of no more than 150 words should be submitted to Dr Sara Jones at email@example.com by the 8 November 2013.
