From now until 26 January 2013, Birmingham Musuem and Art Gallery in Birmingham city centre is hosting an exhibition about Islamic calligraphy - 'Qalam: the Art of Beautiful Writing'. The manuscripts, decorated objects and contemporary artworks on display range from the 7th to the 21st century.
Among the manuscripts in the exhibition are items from the Mingana Collection on loan from the University of Birmingham's Cadbury Research Library. These include very early Qur'anic fragments, Islamic Arabic 1563 and Islamic Arabic 1572, which are also viewable online through the Birmingham Virtual Manuscript Room (VMR). On Thursday 28 November ITSEE postgraduate Alba Fedeli, whose PhD research focuses on early Quur'anic manuscripts, will give a talk at the Cadbury Research Library on campus about these fragments and how they came to be in Birmingham.
