Zibaldone europeo: a critical hyptertext edition in Spanish and English of Giacomo Leopardi's Zibaldone

Led by Professor Maria de las Nieves Muñiz Muñiz, Dept. Filologia Romànica, University of Barcelona, in collaboration with the Leopardi Centre at Birmingham, this project has received initial funding from the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion (MICINN) of €25,000.

Its long-term aim is to produce a hypertextual edition of the Zibaldone in Spanish and English, with facing Italian text, premised on the publication in book form (subject to permissions) of the English and Spanish translations of the original text, with in both cases, indexes, notes and a critical introduction. The preliminary phase (2010-12) will provide us with the parameters for the construction of the hypertext, which will establish a dynamic network of internal concordances and paratextual connections of great sophistication.

The internal complexity of the Zibaldone endows this project with high experimental value because it obliges us to develop methodologies that will bring together a philological and cultural-historical investigation and computer-based information technology applied to multi-lingual corpora and such anomalous texts as miscellanea, diaries and authorial hypertexts. Its usefulness as a universally accessible tool which can be applied by scholars of the work of Leopardi and of the history of modern thought is beyond doubt, as already attested by other electronic resources such as those generated by the University of Barcelona’s Orlando Furioso Hypertext.

International Conference (Barcelona, 26-27 October 2012)

An important staging post in the project will be marked by the international conference “Lo Zibaldone di Leopardi come ipertesto” organized by the University of Barcelona and sponsored by the Centro Nazionale di Studi Leopardiani (CNSL), to be held in Barcelona on 26-27 October 2012.
