For the past half century the University of Birmingham has identified virus research as pivotal in the improvement of human health, both at home and overseas. Our research focuses on the study of viral associated cancers; immune responses and vaccination for chronic viral infection; viral tropism and persistence pathways to escape host immunity.
Birmingham virologists are at the forefront of new technologies for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of virus disease. A background of increasing strength in immune regulation, stem cell technology and epidemiology provides new multidisciplinary opportunities for expanding our horizon of virus research.
Our new centre provides an integrated platform for the mentoring and training of the next generation of virologists as well as providing a portal for effective public engagement.
