Overview

In many cases, the final life-terminating event in many diseases is a clot in an artery in the heart or the brain. We study the events that lead to the early and inappropriate formation of these clots, which are composed of a clump of small blood cells called platelets bound up in a protein called fibrin. This process of clot formation (thrombosis) is influenced by specialist cells that line the blood vessel.

Our research group

We are a multidisciplinary group of researchers studying the basic science and clinical epidemiology of haemostasis, thrombosis and vascular biology. Being attached to City Hospital, our approach is entirely patient focused and we seek to determine how these disease processes impact directly in clinical medicine.

Such studies of pathophysiology run the spectrum of small pilot investigations to large international randomised clinical trials in conditions such as breast and colorectal cancer, ophthalmology, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, and cardiovascular disease (acute coronary syndromes, stroke, deep vein thrombosis).

We have our own dedicated laboratory at City Hospital with facilities for flow cytometry (FACS calibor, Apogee), tissue culture, ELISA and general biochemistry. This is complemented by access to vascular functional studies, sophisticated echocardiography, etc.
