Sleep, Metabolism, Obesity and Diabetic Complications Research Group

Sleep, Metabolism, Obesity and Diabetic Complications Research Group Banner

Group leader: Dr Abd A Tahrani

Overview

Our research focuses on the microvascular complications of diabetes (i.e. eye, nerve, foot and kidney disease) and the impact that sleep disorders (particularly obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), a condition in which patients have breathing irregularities during sleep) has on these complications.

In addition, our research explores the impact of ethnicity on the risk of developing diabetes complications.

Our research group

There are four main inter-related themes to our research group:

1. Exploring the role of sleep-related disorders (particularly obstructive sleep apnoea) and their metabolic consequences in humans and animal models with diabetes, pre-diabetes and/or obesity;

2. Exploring the pathogenesis of and developing new treatments for diabetes-related microvascular complications (neuropathy, the diabetic foot, nephropathy and retinopathy);

3. Exploring the pathogenesis of obesity, developing new treatment strategies and understanding the role of life style modifications and bariatric surgery in managing patients with obesity;

4. Exploring and understanding ethnic differences in patients with obesity and/or diabetes.
