Research and knowledge transfer is crucial to improve the speed, safety, resilience, sustainability, operations and management of railways across the system.
We seek to translate our findings into tangible improvements and impacts on railways. Our integrated research and consultancy approach provides solutions to grand system-wide challenges as well as at component level and sub-system level.
Systems Thinking and Integration
At the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education, we believe that Railways operate most effectively when their design, maintenance and management fully apply systems thinking and integration, not just in engineering and operations but also within the wider systems and requirements that function within our society. Systems engineering and integration are central to what we do at BCRRE. This is exemplified in our education offering by our flagship MSc course “Railway Systems Engineering and Integration” which, over the past two decades, has educated hundreds of today’s railway leaders and experts. Through the partnerships we have with other academic institutions, our extensive network of industrial partners and collaborators our research activity can address all the technical and operational elements of the railway system. We strongly advocate processes that allow for the integration requirements of railway systems, sub systems and technologies.
We take a system-wide view of railways, researching in all aspects of railway technology and operation and have built a world-class reputation in the following areas:
