World Cancer Day: Waking up to reality

Description
We have become much better at raising awareness, diagnosing and treating cancer and survival has doubled in the last 40 years - all news worth celebrating. But have we become better at helping people through their illness as they deal with the fear, the uncertainty, the pain, the anxiety and the loneliness, not to mention the confusion of treatment options and procedures and the exhaustion of navigating the system?

Does doctor know best? A new approach to evidence based health care

Description
Leading health care experts have today called for a fresh approach to evaluating treatment amid claims that dog walking and singing classes can lead to greater health improvements than traditional medicine for some patients. A new policy paper published by the Health Service Management Centre at the University of Birmingham argues that the NHS has become too dominated by quantitative and medically orientated notions of what constitutes valid evidence and suggests there needs to be a shift in focus from services to outcomes.

National and international experts discuss citizen involvement in health and social care decision making

On June 4th leaders from across the NHS and Local Government attended an HSMC/Public Service Academy (PSA) event focussing on the challenges of involving citizens in a time of public sector austerity. Attendees heard presentations from Dr Marion Danis from the National Institutes of Health at the US Department of Health and Human Services, Professor Derek Bolton from Citizens UK and Mr Saidul Haque from Birmingham Citizens.
