NHS Foundation Trusts: 10 years on

Description
There are over two million members of NHS Foundation Trusts. They ought to be a bedrock on which a participatory NHS can be built – after all medical professionals are expert on medical treatment, but patients are expert on what care and dignity feels like when receiving that treatment.

Taxing times for the NHS

Description
On his first day as Chief Executive of NHS England, Simon Stevens stated that the National Health Service was facing its biggest challenge to date because of the most sustained 'budget crunch in its 66-year history'. He argued it was time to 'chart a new course' in order to face the really big challenges – dementia, obesity, inequalities, mental health and wellbeing, personalisation, prevention and empowerment. Only by 'radically transforming services' would the NHS continue to thrive.

Does doctor know best? A new approach to evidence based health care

Description
Leading health care experts have today called for a fresh approach to evaluating treatment amid claims that dog walking and singing classes can lead to greater health improvements than traditional medicine for some patients. A new policy paper published by the Health Service Management Centre at the University of Birmingham argues that the NHS has become too dominated by quantitative and medically orientated notions of what constitutes valid evidence and suggests there needs to be a shift in focus from services to outcomes.
