Chris Watson has many years’ experience of research, teaching and consultancy in housing, urban policy and international urban development. He was Director of the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies at the University of Birmingham from 1987 to 1992 and is now an Honorary Senior Lecturer. He has worked extensively with graduate research and mid-career students, and with academic visitors from many parts of the world.
From 1982 to 1994 Chris Watson was the University of Birmingham’s Director of International Affairs and from 1992 to 2002 he was Director of the University’s Japan Centre.
Chris was Chair of Mercian Housing Association, Birmingham from 1999 to 2005 and Chair of Mercian’s Housing Services Committee from 1993 to 1999. He has been a Trustee of FRC Group Liverpool (Furniture Resource Centre and Bulky Bob’s) since 2002. He is a member of the Asia-Pacific Network for Housing Research and the European Network for Housing Research: and is a co-ordinator of the ENHR Working Group on Housing in Developing Countries. Chris has been a consultant with Housing Vision since 2007. He is a contributor to the Futures Network West Midlands established in 2011 with the aim of opening up and examining key long term issues and potential futures facing the West Midlands region.
In Housing and Communities Research Group, Chris contributes to the mentoring of academic staff visitors from East Asia; and to the supervision of postgraduate research. He is writing and researching on housing and urban renewal in Europe.
