Bioinformatics

There is already a proven synergy and strong cross-College expertise linking Computer Science, Mathematics and Bioinformatics, underpinned by state-of-the-art infrastructure including the BlueBEAR computing cluster that consists of 1,500 processing cores and ca. 150 terabytes of user disk space.

The key strengths of the School of Mathematics at Birmingham are in modelling, computation, simulation and analysis in multi-disciplinary projects.

BlueBEAR clusterSimilarly, the School of Computer Science is internationally renowned in several fields including nature-inspired and intelligent computation.

A particular strength that has initiated many interactions in modelling and bioinformatics is the Centre for Systems Biology (CSB), which incorporates a second computing cluster.

In recent years the successes in clinical systems biology at Birmingham have materialised through several large collaborative projects supported by a diverse portfolio of funding.
