Synthetic biology has been identified by the government and RCUK to be an important area for UK growth and investment and has resulted in the publication of a “Synthetic Biology Roadmap for the UK” document.

A synthetic biology community at the University of Birmingham was established in 2011, bringing together academics from a wide range of departments including Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biosciences, Systems Biology, the Medical School, Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Maths and Law, all with an interest in synthetic biology.
