Funding boost for next generation of synthetic biology research at Birmingham
Description
The University of Birmingham will form part of a consortium of universities investigating ways in which high-throughput DNA synthesis methodologies can be optimised, as part of a nationwide strategy to improve the capacity of DNA synthesis. The consortium will benefit from the award of a £2.2M grant from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), entitled 'Next Generation DNA Synthesis'.

Stand-up comedy on Synthetic Biology delivered by Dr Winn
Description
On Monday 1 September Dr Peter Winn presented synthetic biology as part of a stand-up comedy set at the second Birmingham Bright Club. The Bright club format started at University College London in May 2009 and has now spread to a number of UK cities, combines a professional comedian with stand-up sets by academics and thus provides a vehicle for laughter and learning about interesting stuff.

New synthetic biology rule to modify antibiotics
Description
Scientists from the Universities of Bristol, Birmingham and Leuven (Belgium) have decoded a key step in antibiotic production by bacteria, underpinning the development of new antibiotics to tackle the global threat from multiply resistant superbugs like MRSA and E. coli.
