Dr Thornes has returned to academia since her retirement, after a career doing surveys and investigations in the voluntary sector. She was awarded a PhD by the University of Birmingham in 2011 for her research on detached gardens and urban allotments in English provincial towns from 1750 to 1950: distribution, abundance and transformative processes. Her current research continues this interest in land use change in the inner urban fringe. She is Secretary of the Urban Morphology Research Group.
