John Shipley is a member of the House of Lords, having been introduced in July 2010.

He sits on the Economic Affairs Select Committee and speaks on local government, housing, regeneration and regional development.

In summer 2011 he was appointed as an Adviser to the Government on Cities. He is also Deputy Chair of the Regional Growth Fund.

He was Leader of Newcastle City Council until 1 September 2010, where he was a Liberal and Liberal Democrat councillor for 36 years until his retirement in May 2012. He was a board member of One North East (ONE) from December 2005 until June 2012.

John worked for over 30 years with The Open University and was Regional Director for the North and for the European Union for 8 years until 2005.

He was awarded the OBE for political and public service in 1995. He chairs the NE regional council of the Prince’s Trust.
