Local 'Daphnia' waterfleas are currently being prepared by scientists at the University of Birmingham for their trip to the International Space Station (ISS), where they will be observed by astronauts.

Biosciences - Top six for research
Description
The School of Biosciences has achieved an impressive performance in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF 2014) rising up to 6th place nationally. Over 90 per cent of the School's research is rated as world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*), and, since the previous assessment in 2008, the School has seen a threefold increase in 4* research publications and improvements in every measure.

Biosciences PhD student is finalist in prestigious 3-minute thesis competition
Description
School of Biosciences PhD student Chris Morgan is one of the finalists for the 2014 Universitas 21 Three Minute Thesis competition. This year, the event has involved approximately 800 PhD students from Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Ireland, New Zealand, UK and USA. The original entry has been narrowed down to just 17 students, from which an overall winner will be selected by an international panel of experts.
