As Head of the Education for the School of Biosciences I am responsible for the overall shape and management of our undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes.

My main academic interests are in Microbiology and Molecular Biotechnology. I teach microbiology, focusing on bacteria and their role in human health and disease.

One of my other interests is in innovative teaching methods designed to enhance the experience of learning for students and in particular by developing pre lab material, embedding research-led teaching and supporting students in the transition from school to University.

Qualifications

  • BSc University of Southampton (1982)
  • PhD University of Aston (1986)
  • Post Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, University of Birmingham (2004)
  • Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2017)
  • Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (2016)

Biography

I did my first degree in Southampton and my PhD at Aston. I have done research with different bacteria, which cause disease in humans, most recently looking at how Salmonella invade gut tissue. I teach microbiology, especially about bacteria and their role in human health and disease.

Teaching

My interests are in Bacteriology, particularly molecular aspects and the role of bacteria in disease. I teach Microbiology to undergraduates in all 3 years of their degree

I read and tutor at all levels in the School for example teaching microbiology to all undergraduate years and to masters students and being Module Leader for four UG and one PGT module. Together with my colleagues Pete Lund and Steve Minchin I have written a text book “Gene Cloning, Principles and Applications”.

I am also involved in the development and delivery of skills teaching. During my time in the School I have been responsible for the development of new degree programmes; most recently the MSc Microbiology and Infection, played a key role in our successful application for Royal Society of Biology Accreditation for our UG programmes, developed new modules e.g. Introduction to Microbiology and run a successful annual field course.

Other areas of interest are enhancing the learning experience for students in particular by developing pre lab material, embedding research-led teaching and supporting students in the transition from school to University.

Research

Research area within School of Biosciences: Institute of Microbiology and Infection.

Other activities

I have a long term involvement with measures to widen the participation of a diverse range of students in Higher Education. I have been involved with the University of Birmingham’s flagship Access to Birmingham programme almost since its inception and more recently I have taken on roles as a champion for WP at both University and National level. I have been the University of Birmingham representative on the Realising Opportunities Academic Board (2011-2013) and am now the Chair of the national Realising Opportunities Academic Board (Sciences).

I was External Advisor for the Validation of a new Biological Sciences Programme at the University of Surrey 2013.
