Elite Doctoral Researcher Scholarships 2012 - 2013
The University Graduate School is pleased to announce that it has ten Elite Doctoral Researcher Scholarships available for the 2012-2013 academic year.

As a research student at Birmingham Business School you'll be working with internationally recognised academics, become fully involved with research topics and contribute to debate across the whole school.

Scholarship opportunity

The University of Birmingham Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) is one of 21 across the UK that has been accredited by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). There are at least 14 ESRC scholarships available to fund postgraduate training and doctoral research. Outstanding applicants will be considered for ESRC scholarships in the following subject areas:

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Applied Linguistics
  • Business and Management (including Marketing, Managerial Economics, Political Economy, Regional Development)
  • Economics and Econometrics, Economic and Social History, Education
  • Human Geography
  • International Development (IDD)
  • Political Science and International Studies

The deadline for candidates to notify Schools of their interest is 4.00pm on 27 January 2012 (check with Schools as some have earlier deadlines). Those recruited to PhDs are expected to take further research training during their research. Research degrees offered:

We offer four levels of research programmes:

Doctorate (PhD):

The PhD degree requires a minimum period of study of 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time and is by thesis only, supported by appropriate research training.

Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA):

A key feature of the DBA is that you are able to study whilst you work. The benefits of this way of studying are vast – both for you and your employer. You get expert teaching and the ability to apply learning closely to your area of work, and in turn your employer benefits from the boost to your skills.

Master of Philosophy Business (MPhil):

The MPhil is a two year full-time or four year part-time degree, suitable if you wish to study for a research qualification, with a shorter thesis requirement than the PhD.

The MSc by research is a one year full-time or two year part-time degree. Whilst still a valuable research programme, it requires a shorter period of study, with a smaller thesis size.

The Business research programmes are available on a full and part-time basis for home and EU students (except for the DBA which is part-time only).

As a research student at Birmingham, you will work as part of one of our five research departments; researching, attending and organising seminars. In short, you'll play a full and active part in the life of Birmingham Business School.

Our five departments deliver authoritative research and specialist teaching to the world of business. They cover the key management disciplines of accounting, finance, economics, marketing, organisation, human resources and strategy and procurement, economics and urban and regional studies.

You will become part of a research community which extends not only across the Business School but the University of Birmingham as a whole. Through the University’s Graduate School you will be able to meet, network and collaborate with students from other disciplines. Amongst its many aims and objectives the Graduate School will provide you with carefully structured training courses to assist your study.  The Graduate School has also established progress review procedures that regularly and clearly record your progress throughout your studies.

Our full and part-time PhD Business programmes have ESRC accreditation.
