Supervision is provided by either one or two supervisors, who give essential support and guidance for your research. Students involved in similar research areas may also have some group supervision.
Members of staff who teach the research methods courses are available to help you. Besides following the required research training courses, you are encouraged to take other relevant courses offered by the School, for example, modules on our current range of postgraduate taught programmes.
All first year doctoral students who have not previously taken a course in general research methods skills and knowledge are expected to take and pass the Business School’s Introduction to Research Methods course, which is worth 10 credits. This module contributes towards the 20 credits-worth of research methods training students are expected to undertake in their first year. Generally we would expect students to have taken one qualitative and one quantitative course by their second year of study (depending on their existing research experience).Further advanced quantitative and qualitative courses may be taken as appropriate.
Each subject group runs seminars for staff and postgraduate students, which are advertised throughout the School and which you are welcome and encouraged to attend. Postgraduate students are expected to actively participate in the seminar series of their subject group.
Postgraduate Research students are supported by Information Services through IT and Research Skills training for joint statement skills A-E.
Students are still eligible to attend any or all of our open programme of courses details of which can be found on the IS training website.
