I have now completed my degree and have managed to secure a graduate placement with a highly recognised global professional services firm.
After completing a gap year placement with one of the Big Four accountancy firms, I joined the University of Birmingham to study BSc Economics. I was very fortunate to have had this experience before starting my degree and it made me more aware of the importance of gaining a good degree from a highly regarded University.
The University of Birmingham offers a comprehensive degree outline and the modules offered are interesting and challenging – they range from core economic modules to more applied ones such as environmental and health economics. Many opportunities are available to get involved within the Economics department and they encourage feedback via the student-staff committee of which I was a member. This allows students to raise any issues they may have about the course with the staff. There is also an Economics society which organises the social side of the department such as nights out and arranging for employers to come to speak with the students
The University of Birmingham is a campus based university with lots of greenery and it has its own train station which can get you to the vibrant and lively city centre within 5 minutes. Outside the Economics department there are various other societies and groups to get involved in. I was a member of the University of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra which was a great way to meet people from different courses and it was refreshing to be involved in something non-degree related. As President of a society at the university, it was encouraging to see that the university supported societies in all aspects. A whole range of sports facilities are provided by the university - it was great to go and play squash with friends after lectures and to let off some steam! The social life is very vibrant and the famous Broad Street is only a stone’s throw away and there are many eating places on and off campus.
I have now completed my degree and have managed to secure a graduate placement with a highly recognised global professional services firm and I have developed a very strong friend circle who will remain with me forever. The support and advice received from personal tutors and lecturers is invaluable and they made my experience at the university more enjoyable. Thinking back about the last 3 years – my memories are filled with fun, hard work, panic and enjoyment! I have come out of it as an independent, confident person with a positive outlook to life.
