Profile:

The disciplines of procurement and supply management, operations management and project management have never being higher up the corporate agenda as firms try to meet the challenges of ever-increasing competitive pressures and public sector organisations try to cope with ever-increasing pressure on their budgets.

Through the Procurement and Operations Management Group (POM), the Birmingham Business School is fully equipped to assist managers or aspiring managers develop a high level of competence in these disciplines and obtain an understanding of how they fit within the overall management of the firm or public sector organisation.

Specialist areas of research within POM include organisational buying behaviour, supplier relationship management, public sector contracting, global value chain management, international project management, product design and conflict management. 

Since the group was founded in 1993, POM research has been funded by many organisations including the ESRC, EPSRC, DTI, NHS, Rolls Royce, CIPS, BUPA, Birmingham City Council, AXA, Interbrew and Conoco. Articles based upon the research have been published in internationally-leading journals such as IJOPM, Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, Public Administration and Work, Employment and Society.

As part of its teaching for the school, the POM Group offers a specialist, CIPS-accredited procurement and supply management executive MBA programme and modules across all of the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate management programmes. POM also offers short courses tailored to individual corporate needs and research / consultancy support. Current and past clients of POM include IBM, BP, NHS and the Department of Health. 

POM has an extensive track record of both academic and practical business achievements and vast experience of working with managers, firms and public sector organisations.
