Jo would be interested in supervising students in the following areas:

• Work-life balance and the relationship between home and work in family businesses.
• Women entrepreneurs – in particular issues around access to finance
• The organisation and management of science.
• Careers of professional workers - I am particularly interested in those who choose to leave traditional organisational employment.

 

Research degree opportunities

Jo has two main areas of research interest:

The study of career:  Jo has lead a number of projects exploring careers in a variety of contexts, including academic scientists, women entrepreneurs, NHS managers and  women approaching retirement. She has received funding for this from ESRC, the British Academy and NHS SDO.

The management of science: She has held two ESRC grants examining the organisation of science and the careers of scientists. Her most recent project examined the career transitions of scientists moving from the public to private sector.  She has been successful in gaining funding for this from ESRC, and EPSRC.  She is currently developing research looking at the relationship between the public and private sector in the development of stem cell science and technology. 

She adopts a qualitative approach towards research andmaintains an interest in innovative approaches towards methodology. She has also co-authored textbooks on organisation theory and epistemology in management research.
