The disciplines of procurement and supply management, operations management and project management have never being higher up the corporate agenda as firms try to meet the challenges of ever-increasing competitive pressures and public sector organisations try to cope with ever-increasing budgetary pressures.
The Department of Procurement and Operations Management (POM) at Birmingham Business School is fully equipped to help those working in, or aspiring to work in, the areas of procurement, operations and project management to develop a high level of competence and to understand how they fit within the overall management of a firm or public sector organisation.
POM has an extensive track record of both academic and practical business achievements and vast experience of working with managers, firms and public sector organisations.
Specialist areas of research within POM include organisational buying behaviour, supplier relationship management, public sector contracting, global value chain management, international project management, product design and conflict management.
POM research has been funded by many organisations including the ESRC, EPSRC, NHS NIHR, DTI, NHS, Rolls Royce, CIPS, BUPA, Birmingham City Council, AXA, Interbrew and Conoco. Members of the department have recently been awarded grants by the EU on High Value Engineering Networks (HVEN), by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) on procurement and supply chain management in the NHS and by Midlands Excellence to promote operational excellence in Midlands businesses.
Articles based upon the research have been published in internationally-leading journals such as International Journal of Operations and Production Management, International Journal of Project Management, Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, International Journal of Technology Management, Public Administration and Work, Employment and Society.
Some of our staff are members are part of the Global Value Chains research cluster.
As part of its teaching for the School, POM offers a CIPS-accredited procurement and supply management executive MBA programme, as well as modules across all of the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate management programmes. POM also offers short courses tailored to individual corporate needs. Current and past clients include IBM, BP, NHS and the Department of Health.
