This year the University of Birmingham will once again be running a Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition, which is open to PhD students to effectively communicate the significance of their research in just three minutes with the chance of winning £1,000.

Developed by the University of Queensland in 2008, the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition gives doctoral researchers just three minutes to deliver an engaging presentation on their thesis topic, its originality and its significance.

The exercise develops research communication skills and supports the development of research students' capacity to effectively explain their work concisely (using only one slide with no transitions) in a language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience.

The heats of the 2014 Birmingham Three Minute Thesis Competition will take place on 19 and 20 May and the final on 11 June. Winners will have the chance to represent Birmingham in the first ever UK-wide 3MT contest.
