EIC - Research into Small and Medium Enterprises (RISME)

Aims and Objectives:

  1. RISME is a subgroup of researchers and research within the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre. It conducts research into the funding and performance of the more typical entrepreneurial ventures which are generally small (Micro businesses). The research of RISME feeds into the consultancy and training programs in the university and those of government departments.
  2. RISME conducts research to investigate the nature of entrepreneurs, their businesses and their performance, with particular emphasis on the constraints they may face as a result of market imperfections and human capital deficiencies. The scope of research is international and we are particularly interested in the role of smes in country economic development.
  3. The research is typically (but not exclusively) theoretically-based empirical research using longitudinal datasets available in the EIC derived from a combination of commercial sources and ad hoc surveys. It is targeted in the first instance at international quality academic journals in the area such as The Economic Journal, Small Business Economics Journal and the Journal of Business Venturing.
  4. However, the policy implications of research for smes and government departments are a central part of dissemination conducted by RISME and these are summarised in reports, discussion papers, newspaper articles, joint academic practitioner conferences and seminars.
  5. RISME welcomes visiting speakers from the entrepreneurial, sme associations and government communities and international scholars to provide talks and seminars on topics of current and future interest to smes.
