When I joined the University of Birmingham it was ranked 4th in the Guardian university league tables for BSc Economics and this was justified right from day one.
When I joined the University of Birmingham it was ranked 4th in the Guardian university league tables for BSc Economics and this was justified right from day one. The programme offers a diverse range of modules from Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, to Econometric Theory and Game Theory. The further you progress into your degree, the more you can tailor-make and specialise in the fields you most enjoy. For me, it was ‘behavioural and experimental’ economics, which is an up-and-coming branch in which the department’s research is growing rapidly.
I was impressed by the quality of teaching staff as they range across a broad spectrum of specialist fields and are all engaged in exciting research projects, of course providing several opportunities for students to help gather research if they are particularly interested. I found the department would often go out of their way to help you reach your potential and get the best knowledge and skills out of the experience. It is clear there is an intention for each student to leave well rounded and have the advantage of a broad skill-set.
The university basks in a proud and prosperous history. On campus there is a community feel and there are endless ways to get involved. Every student can definitely find their place in the university, with hundreds of societies to choose from, even course related such as the economics society, and the chance to create your own! Birmingham itself is a thriving, vibrant city, which has something for everyone; from relaxing canal-side bars and clubs to entertainment complexes such as StarCity.
After my University experience, I will be moving to London to begin my career with a multi-asset class investment fund where I will be a Financial Analyst. I truly believe the education and life-experience I gained in my time at the University of Birmingham are price-less assets in helping me shape my future success.
