Facilities and services in the School

The School of Cancer Sciences provides high technology facilities, and expertise in their use, to support both School and external research.

Several of these facilities form part of the Technology Hub:

  • Biomolecular NMR Facility
HWB•NMR offers access to researchers from Birmingham and across the world to study the 3D structures and interactions of proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids and metabolites at the Henry Wellcome Building for NMR
  • Protein Expression Facility
The Protein Expression Facility (PEF) aims to provide a high quality recombinant expression service and to act as a focal point for advice about all aspects of recombinant protein production and downstream applications
  • Proteomics
A range of new Bruker mass spectrometers, HPLCs as well as computer equipment/software are available

In addition the School provides the following services:

  • Bioinformatics Analysis
The bioinformatics group analyzes genetic, epigenetic, transcriptomic and proteomic data from basic research and clinical trials and develops necessary software and databases
  • Flow Cytometry Service
The Service provides chargeable Flow Cytometric analysis for research purposes to the School of Cancer Sciences as well as the wider academic community
  • Hepcidin Analysis Service
The service has developed a hepcidin-25 specific assay for the accurate quantitation of hepcidin in biological fluids with the aim of providing robust and reliable hepcidin measurements to aid in advancing the understanding of iron biology in human health
