About

Dr. Michael O’Reilly is a Wellcome Trust-funded clinical research fellow in CEDAM in the Institute of Biomedical Research. He is also an honorary specialist registar in endocrinology in the Queen Elizabeth and Birmingham Women’s Hospitals. Michael is currently undertaking a PhD in the tissue-specific mechanisms linking insulin resistance and androgen excess in polycystic ovary syndrome.

Biography

Michael graduated in medicine with honours from the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) in 2005. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2007. Having completed the bulk of his clinical training in endocrinology in Ireland, Michael joined CEDAM at the University of Birmingham in August 2011. He successfully obtained a three-year Wellcome Trust clinical research training fellowship in 2012 .

Research

Michael is currently undertaking a PhD on the links between insulin resistance and androgen excess in polycystic ovary syndrome. This encompasses a clinical study conducted in the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility as well as in vitro studies using primary human adipocytes and human adrenal cell lines. He is also studying the complex links between metabolism and fertility in a cohort of patients with loss-of-function mutations of the insulin receptor (INSR).
