Dr Stavros Apostolakis is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer in the school of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, University of Birmingham.

Dr Apostolakis’ time is currently devoted to clinical and research activities as part of Professor Gregory Lip’s and Professor Paulus Kirchhof’s research groups in the Centre for Cardiovascular Sciences.

Biography

Dr Apostolakis graduated from Medical School, University of Crete in 1999. He completed his PhD research in the same institution in 2007. He practiced medicine in Greece until October 2011. He was elected Senior Lecturer in Medicine in Democritus University of Thrace, Greece in 2010. In the same year he was awarded the European Society of Cardiology Atherothrombosis Research Grant. In October 2011 he moved his professional activities in the City Hospital, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust and the Centre of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Birmingham. His main research interests are genetic epidemiology, inflammation in coronary artery disease and atrial fibrillation.

Teaching

  • Once a week clinical training of 3d year medical students and junior doctors.
  • Invited lectures as part of postgraduate courses in University of Birmingham.
  • Invited lectures in national (British) or international educational symposia mainly in the field of atrial fibrillation and new oral anticoagulants.

Research

  • Epidemiology of atrial fibrillation and novel anticoagulant therapies for atrial fibrillation.
  • Inflammation and atherosclerosis.
  • Inflammatory mediators as diagnostic and prognostic markers in cardiovascular disease.
  • Genetic epidemiology in the field of cardiovascular disease.

Other activities

  • Member of the European Society of Cardiology, the British Cardiovascular Society and the European Association of Echocardiography.
  • Member of the Editorial board of the International Journal of Clinical Practice.
  • Invited reviewers in 7 international peer reviewed journals including the International Journal of Cardiology, the Lancet and Circulation.
