About

Mary is extensively involved in the teaching of pharmacology in particular and medical science in general. Her current roles include:

  • Deputy Director BMedSc (Biological Science)
  • Head of Student Experience BMedSc (Biological Science)
  • Student Liaison Contact and Chair of the BMedSc Staff Student Committee
  • Admission Tutor for students intercalating in BMedSc (Biological Science)
  • Director of Pharmacology component of the Chemistry with Pharmacology Major Minor Programme
  • Module co-ordinator for various modules on the MBChB, BMedSc and Chemistry with Pharmacology programmes

She has expertise in medical and science education, mathematical modelling, radioligand binding and measurement of second messengers.

Mary has a part-time contract, her normal “office hours” being 9.00-3.00, School Terms only.

Qualifications

  • Member of the Higher Education Academy
  • PhD
  • BSc

Biography

Mary was born and brought up in London. She obtained a BSc in Pharmacology from University College London and a PhD from the National Institute of Medical Research at Mill Hill.

Following post-docs in Leicester and Birmingham, she obtained a lectureship in the Department of Pharmacology in 1989. She developed a successful research lab investigating the molecular pharmacology of drug receptor interactions, receptor desensitisation and regulation of endothelial cell function.

Since the birth of her first child in 1996, Mary has worked part time, concentrating mainly on education, as research is not a part-time activity. She is very well thought of as a lecturer, consistently receiving positive feedback from students and in 2009 she was awarded the REME award for Excellence in Medical Education.

Teaching

  • MBChB
  • GEC
  • BDS
  • BMedSc
  • BSc/MSci Chemistry with Pharmacology
  • Biochemistry programmes
  • Human Biology programmes
  • PGCert Learning and Teaching in Higher Education

Research

Most of Mary’s time is taken up with teaching and the management of teaching activities. However she does still dabble in research into both education and mathematical modelling of drug-receptor interactions.

Other activities

Mary frequently provides CPD training in Pharmacology for podiatrists and other health care professionals.
