About

Hongwei Wu joined Birmingham University as a research fellow in the School of Chemical Engineering in 2012. Hongwei has published over 30 research papers in leading international journals as well as international conferences. His research is focused on, but not limited to: Thermodynamics and Fluid dynamics, Heat Exchanger; Energy System and Process Design, Control, Simulation & Optimisation; Renewable Energy, Energy Storage, Heat Recovery; Experimental Heat and Mass Transfer, Multiphase Flow and Thermofluids; Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Turbulence Modelling; Transport Phenomena, Porous Media; Gas Turbine and Cooling Technology.

  • PhD (Distinction) in Mechanical Engineering, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics 2004
  • Beng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics 1998

Biography

Dr Wu received his BEng and PhD with specialisation in Mechanical and Thermal Engineering (Thermofluids) from Beihang University (formerly Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics), China. He worked as an academic at Beihang University (2007-2009) and research fellow for over 6 years at Brunel University (UK, 2009-2012), University of British Columbia and University of Alberta (Canada, 2004-2007) prior to joining Birmingham University in October 2012. Dr Wu has been getting involved in various funded projects such as EU, EPSRC, NSERC. Apart from his academic background, Hongwei has a strong industrial link. He has developed research collaborations with leading companies in UK,China, Canada, who have supported his research. He also carried out consultancy work for energy-related industrial company.

Teaching

Teaching Programmes

His teaching experience covers different thermo-fluids in Mechanical and Chemical Engineering. He would like to teach courses including but not limited to Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer, Heat Exchangers; Mechanical Theory and Design, Material Mechanics; Energy System, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Design; Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, Fluid dynamics; Computational Heat Transfer; CAD (Solidworks, ProE, UG, AutoCAD).

Other activities

Dr Wu has been a regular reviewer of several leading journals. He was also involved in organizinginternational conference and served as chair/co-chair in International Conference of Applied Energy.
