Susan, BSc Chemistry Graduate 'Twenty years after completing my A-levels, I was able to realise a long held ambition to study for a degree in Chemistry. To get the most out of my opportunity I sought a University and course that offered high academic standards and the “buzz” that comes from a leading-edge department. My first visit to Birmingham made this an easy choice and in hindsight was absolutely the right one for me.
The excellent teaching throughout all the chemistry disciplines and tutorial support made easier access to often challenging concepts, which arise in Chemistry.
The superb structure of the course also allowed me to build up my confidence in practical skills, which at the same time reinforced my understanding of the theory. Without exception, the laboratory staff were extremely supportive and patient with a sometimes(!) apprehensive mature student.
I also benefited from a first-rate pastoral system, with approachable and understanding tutors and personnel to help and guide me through the inevitable difficult times. My time at Birmingham has been the most rewarding experience and truthfully a part of me wishes it didn’t have to end.'
Amrit, BSc Chemistry 'My first experience of the Chemistry department at Birmingham came in the form of revision lectures that I attended whilst studying for my A-levels.
Birmingham Chemistry seemed like a great place to study and since coming here I have not been disappointed. The beauty of the campus is unsurpassed by other universities that I have visited and it is especially great in the Summer when it is possible to revise out in the sun.
One aspect of my time at Birmingham that I have valued the most has been the relationship between staff and students: most lecturers are easy to approach and will make the time to sit with you and help you through any problems you may have. My time in the School of Chemistry has helped me to develop a wide-range of skills which proved invaluable for gaining entry on to a PhD programme. I'm sure that these skills will continue to help me throughout life.'
Heather, BSc Chemistry 'My first experiences of Chemistry at Birmingham were attending evening lectures in the department throughout my college years.
From that point Birmingham was the university for me and I was not disappointed when I started studying here. The department was welcoming and friendly which only complimented the expertise and high standard of teaching that I experienced during my undergraduate years.
Staying on as a postgraduate at Birmingham has given me the opportunity to work in interesting and new areas of science and develop work skills that will be valuable no matter what my chosen career path.'
Holly, MSci Chemistry 'Completing my Masters degree in Chemistry has been a fantastic achievement. Birmingham is a great place to study with a beautiful campus and great facilities. While I chose to study Chemistry at degree level, it was not until I was actually at Birmingham that my interest for the subject really developed. The teaching staff are first class and are willing to help in any way they can and the course, including practical work, is well structured and interesting.
The organisation within the department is brilliant and the staff - not just the teaching staff - have made my time at Birmingham thoroughly enjoyable, so much so I have decided to stay and to continue on with a PhD in Organic Chemistry.'
Lawrence, MSci, Chemistry with Business Management 'Science was always my favourite area of study at school and during my A-levels I knew that I wanted to study chemistry at University but, I also wanted to maintain my interests in the business world, Birmingham offered me the ideal opportunity; a Major/Minor combination of Chemistry with Business Management.
Birmingham Chemistry were happy for me to suspend my studies for a year whilst I pursued my wish to gain industrial experience and after applying to major companies I landed a year long placement with AstraZeneca.
My year gave me the opportunity to work with some advanced analytical techniques and equipment whilst developing my personal skills. I have now returned to Birmingham for the final year of my course and upon graduating intend to apply for a job back at AstraZeneca to further my career in the pharmaceutical industry."
