A team from the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education has won the IMechE Railway Division Prize (WA Agnew Meritorious/ CN Goodall Award Prize) 2011 for their paper, 'Real-Time Train Re-Scheduling in Junction Areas'.

Aspiring engineers go 'on the rails' at residential course

Forty aspiring teenage engineers were on campus in July to take part in a four-day residential course, exploring the technologies and systems of railway engineering. Hosted by the University of Birmingham's Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE), 16 and 17 year olds from across the country took part in one of two challenges that explored aerodynamics, crashworthiness, radio communications, railway control and signalling systems.

This year's Mapping the Underworld (MTU) annual event was held at the Ordinance Survey, Southampton on the 8th of September and was supported by the Pipeline Industries Guild (PIG) and UK Water Industries Research (UKWIR). Mapping the underworld is a major research programme aimed at developing a robust suite of techniques for identifying the range of services that underlie our streets. More accurate identification of this, often complex, network of pipes and cables has the potential to significantly reduce costs, delays and accidents.

Prathan Rungthonkit, a PhD research student under the supervision of Dr Jimmy Yang, has won the Institution of Structural Engineers, Midland Counties Branch, Regional Structural Engineering Awards (2011) through his research on "Behaviour of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) under combined axial and transverse loadings".
