Students are an integral part of our team-based research and the School provides support for studentships, in addition to a variety of other funding sources including research councils, to support of these students. This is targeted within our main areas of focus within the School’s theme areas and priority is assigned to younger researchers alongside senior mentors in the allocation of studentships to facilitate establishment of research programmes.

The Graduate Research School allows students to receive a variety of training support, which encourages interaction. The Graduate School has contributed to a vibrant research culture where students are seen as part of the research team. Within our research theme areas, team-based research ensures that students are an integral part of the culture of the teams interacting with other team members on a daily basis and contributing to team research discussions within both informal lab and more formal meetings and seminars. We actively encourage student participation at a variety of national and international scientific meetings, including BSDR and IADR, as well as more specialist meetings where they can present their research alongside other established researcher’s within those teams.

Presently, we are also partners (other Birmingham partners include Biosciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering & Computer Sciences) in a bid to establish a Life Sciences Interface Doctoral Training Centre with EPSRC (Walmsley, Landini, Sammons, Palin).
