Rachel Sammons is the Programme Lead for the BMedSc(Biomedical Materials Science) programme. She is also First Year Tutor and Examinations Officer for this Programme.

Rachel Sammons research interests focus on surface interactions between mammalian cells and bacteria and biomaterials – especially titanium and hydroxyapatite, for bone repair and the prevention of infection.

Peter is a part time clinical lecturer involved in the Masters in Advanced General Dental Practice. In addition to his academic and teaching roles, he runs a small General Dental Practice in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

He is a member of the PREP panel, and is actively involved in practice based research.

 Dr Ben Scheven is Senior Lecturer in Oral Cell Biology and has an established track record in the cell biology of bone and dental tissues in health and disease. His current research centres around the role and application of mesenchymal and dental stem cells in tissue repair and regeneration, nerve repair and neuronal cell differentiation and therapeutic ultrasound.

Mr Praveen Sharma

NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow and Clinical Lecturer

Mr Sharma is a full time NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow and Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Birmingham’s School of Dentistry.

His current research interests include investigating the impact of periodontal (gum) disease on the general health of patients with chronic kidney disease.

Dr Richard Shelton

Dr Richard Shelton

Senior Lecturer and Head of Biomaterials Unit

School of Dentistry

Dick Shelton is Senior Lecturer in Biomaterials and Head of the Biomaterials Unit.

He has published over 60 research papers in scientific journals as well as reviews and a book chapter in the areas of bone biomaterials, tissue engineering and application of hydrogels. 

He has received grants from EPSRC, BBSRC and the Wellcome Trust and the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research.

Richard is a part-time Clinical Supervisor in Clinical General Dental Practice and Conservative Dentistry. Richard is also an assessor for the MSc course in Advanced General Dental Practice, having himself achieved a Distinction in the course in 2015.
