About

Mike Hofmann is a Senior Lecturer in Biomaterials and also the Admissions Tutor for the Biomedical Materials Science course.

 

Mike has published extensively in the field of bone cements, dental cements and controlled drug delivery. His research has been supported by international funding bodies, EPSRC and Industry.


Qualifications

  • PhD (german “Dr. rer. nat”) 2003.
  • Masters (german “Diplom”) 1998.

Biography

Mike Hofmann graduated in Experimental Physics at the University of Wurzburg, Germany, in 1998 and obtained his doctorate in the Department for Functional Materials in Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Wurzburg in 2003.

 

In 2004 Mike came to the Biomaterials Unit, School of Dentistry, University of Birmingham as an EU Marie Curie Research Fellow. He was then appointed as a Lecturer in Biomaterials at the School of Dentistry in 2006 and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2011.

RESEARCH THEMES

  • Calcium phosphates, bone cements, dental cements, cementitious biomaterials for orthopaedic and dental application, controlled drug delivery.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

  • Calcium phosphate bone cements for orthopaedic application.
    The research is carried out in national and international collaboration with collaborators from Canada, Germany and several UK Universities. The work has been supported by the EU and the EPSRC.
  • Alternative bone cements for orthopaedic application.
    The research is carried out in collaboration with an industrial sponsor. The work has immense commercial potential and a patent based on the research findings has been filed. The work is also supported by the EPSRC.
  • Portland-cement based cements for dental application
    The project has a substantial clinical and commercial potential  and is supported by a Mercia Spinner grant.
  • Novel silicate based bone cements
    The research is carried out in multidisciplinary collaboration between several Schools at the University of Birmingham.

  • Teaching on the MSc Implant Dentistry Programme at Warwick Medical School.
