Being a cosmo columnist

Posted on Wednesday 30th October 2013

As part of the Book to the Future literary festival at the University of Birmingham, Jo Usmar, Cosmopolitan columnist, freelance journalist and published author, is here to tell you about her career in magazine, newspaper and online journalism and her new series of lifestyle books (called This Book Will, out in January).

Having written for titles including Stylist, The Mirror, Fabulous, Heat, The Sun and of course Cosmo - covering everything from celebrity interviews and travel to topical features - University of Birmingham English alumna Jo Usmar is perfectly placed to offer helpful tips for future writers on how to get published.

Jo guides you through her career since graduating, how to make it as a magazine journalist and how to pitch both your fiction and non-fiction book ideas to potential agents and publishers.

Book to the Future was made possible thanks to sponsorship from the Alumni Impact Fund and the University's College of Arts and Law.

Interview

After her talk, Jo also gave an interview about her time at Birmingham and how it has benefitted her career.
