Kirill Ermolaev, MA Translation Studies 2013
I would like to thank the Department for the high quality of education provided, attentive tutoring and very friendly atmosphere. I liked the way people could take care of others in a very international environment and without prejudices towards people from other cultures and countries. This atmosphere gives an extra motivation for students.
Isabella Seeger, MA TEFL/TESL (Distance Learning) 2011
The MA has given my career an unexpected boost. Starting out to merely get a formal qualification recognised by the German state school where I was teaching, the course soon had me "hooked" and I started rethinking my career, looking for academic vacancies. I have now found a job teaching and researching at my local University.
So thank you for the excellent teaching and support which have made this possible for me.
Diego Navarro, Applied Linguistics (Distance Learning) 2011
Professionally, the MA has helped open a lot of doors for me. Even before completing the degree, I was able to secure an excellent position as Learning Advisor/ Lecturer working in a state-of-the-art self-access centre at a reputable university in Japan. Since receiving the degree, I have been able to secure a fully funded position as a PhD student in New Zealand.
Personally, my experience with the Birmingham MA was nothing but positive. Everyone involved with the program has been extremely helpful and professional. I learned a lot not only from the modules, but also from the tutors and supervisors, and although it was a lot of work and quite stressful at times, it was worth it.
Joanne Sato MA TEFL (Distance Learning) 2010
I have really enjoyed the experience and am thankful to all of the team in Birmingham and the tutors based in Japan. The support has been phenomenal! It hasn't been easy for me, but then no MA should be easy. I have been asked to present at numerous events and have even had a few job offers from other universities (for which I hadn't even applied).
Jina Zhao, MA TEFL 2010
I had a wonderful time at CELS in Westmere. The course was intensive and quite hard work. As an international student, I made great progress and improved my language and knowledge during the year. What’s more I’ve now got a group of lovely friends and colleagues. We really enjoyed studying and living in Birmingham and I hope to come back soon.
Graham Burton, MA Applied Linguistics (Distance Learning) 2010
I'm a recent graduate of the distance MA Applied Linguistics programme and I am very pleased to have chosen the course. The modules themselves were excellent – interesting, practical and up to date. Contact with the university was generally extremely simple, and I was also able to benefit greatly from contact with staff in the department.
Aleksandra Klimczok, MA TEFL/TESL 2010
I really enjoyed the TEFL course at the University of Birmingham. I met great people and it was fascinating to exchange opinions on how English is taught in different countries. This course gave me an insight into the theory of teaching various aspects of language as well as the opportunity to try them out in practice. All the tutors and staff were very helpful. I would recommend the TEFL course to anybody who wants to develop as an English teacher.
Jeremy Sands App Ling student 2010 grad
It's been a wonderful experience for me both professionally and personally. In addition, I've been overwhelmed by the amount of assistance and support I've had throughout the programme.
Gemma Burgess, MA TEFL/TESL 2010
I recently graduated from CELS with my MA TEFL/TESL and would have no hesitation in recommending this programme. There is a wide range of modules on offer which personalises learning, making modules relevant and interesting. The lectures were fun, informative and thought-provoking and provided an excellent opportunity for discussion and reflection. The strongest aspect of this course, in my opinion, is the staff. Their commitment to providing detailed and constructive feedback really enabled me to find my own voice and style.
Emma Rowe, MA Translation Studies 2010
I am currently working with a small Translation Agency. I am a 'Project Manager and Trainee Translator', so, happily, I am using my skills gained during the MA!!
James Turner, TEFL 2010
I was really pleased with my choice to do my MA at CELS. The courses were interesting and varied, usually involving a mix of practical and theoretical sessions. The teaching staff were really supportive throughout my time there, and pushed me to succeed. It has certainly helped me to get the foothold I needed to work in the UK EFL sector.
